Sergeant James H. Kelly, who may havebeen from New York, served in the United States Army Signal Corps from 1861 to1866. The collection consists of a ten-page manuscript in whichJames H. Kelly described his service in the United States Signal Corps in 1862,including his account of the Battle of Shiloh, his time spent traveling along theMississippi and White rivers, and campaigns of which he was a part; his certificatedeclaring him a sergeant, 1864, signed by William J.L. Nicodemus; Kelly's statementto the pension bureau; a letter written aboard the steamer White Cloud to hisbrother Ralph and sister Jane that details an attack on the boat in July 1862; andfive pins and one medal recognizing his service during the Civil War.
